Design:
The structural design of the Doblin Residence was a simple exploration of steel as a tactile material in residential construction. Similar wide flange members were chosen for the exposed columns, lateral bracing and roof structure to create a simple frame inserted into the confines of the existing surrounding brick masonry walls. The roof structure is comprised simply of the wide flange framing members and a deep steel roof deck that twists to form a doubly curved ruled surface. The structural frame is then extended through the curtain wall into an exterior courtyard contained with the surrounding existing masonry.
