Design:
The design for the West Wing of the Grand Hotel was an interesting structural challenge as we were adding two additional floors to the hotel on top of an existing four story wood structure. For this project, a steel table top structure was inserted into the existing wood bearing walls down to new foundations in the crawl space. The table top structure was devised in two phases. The first phase involved the erection of the new roof structure on new steel columns to create a weather canopy for the renovation of the existing roof. The second phase created a new floor structure at the elevation of the existing roof after demolition. The new roof and floor structures then became an integrated story high steel truss which distributed the new floor and roof loads to the new columns.
